Looking after your gemstones

Our advice on how to take care of your gemstones and show them some love.

Gemstones are typically quite soft, this means a sudden knock or a change in temperature can cause cracks.

Try and take your gems to a professional jeweller at least once a year to ensure they are in the best quality and any damage can be caught early to give your jewellery a long life.

Opals require special care. Never use an ultrasonic, never use chemicals and avoid heat. Don't put your opal in strong sunlight, this can dry out the water in opals which could cause hazing or colour change.

Pearls are also incredibly delicate and can scratch easily, protect against damage by storing your pearl jewellery in separate pouches or wrapping them in tissue away from your other jewels and abrasive surfaces. Also, remove your pearl jewellery when cleaning and always put on after you’ve used your perfume as chemicals and alcohol can cause colour change. PicMonkey Collage 2
When it comes to cleaning your gemstones, the safest way to approach this is to carefully wash in lukewarm water using a mild liquid soap or detergent that contains no ammonia. To dry, use a soft, lint-free cloth. If there’s dirt that cannot be removed this way, take your jewellery to a professional for further advice and to prevent damaging your gemstones with home remedies.
