Tanzanite may be a relative newcomer to the world of coloured gemstones, but it was one of the most exciting gem discoveries of the 20th century. This exotic and widely coveted gemstone was given the name 'tanzanite' by Tiffany & Co. after it was discovered in a very small mining area in the country of Tanzania. The scientific name of "blue-violet zoisite" was not thought to be sufficiently consumer friendly by Tiffany's marketing department, who introduced it to the market in 1968. Often described as “velvety,” mostly because of its vivid colours, high clarity and potential for large cut stones, the tanzanite stone quickly became a sensation.
