The garnet stone is available in a wide range of colours from green to orange, but the most widely recognised is a deep and rich red. Used for jewellery and ornamental decorations for a millennia, it’s one of the oldest known gemstones, loved by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The word ‘garnet’ comes from the Latin word granatus for seed or grain, most likely a reference to the seeds of the pomegranate fruit which the stone resembles in colour, size and shape. Pomegranates were traditionally eaten at New Year, hence the association with the month of January.
