WHY A DIAMOND?

There is a reason diamonds continue to be the most sought-after gemstone in the world. Their natural brilliance, rarity, and durability make them truly unique - a gemstone born under immense pressure deep within the Earth, taking billions of years to form.

Every diamond is a natural phenomenon. Once unearthed, only the most skilled diamond cutters can unlock its full beauty. The result is a gem with unmatched fire, scintillation, and sparkle - a masterpiece of nature, refined by human hands.

Diamonds are also the hardest natural material on Earth, making them ideal for everyday wear and symbolic of enduring strength. This resilience, coupled with their unrivalled beauty, makes them the perfect centrepiece for luxurious jewellery that lasts a lifetime.

A diamond is not just an accessory, it’s an everlasting symbol of love, elegance, and individuality.

Understanding the 4 Cs

When selecting a diamond, it’s important to understand how quality is assessed. Diamonds are graded using a universal system known as the 4 Cs: Cut, Clarity, Carat and Colour. At Hugh Rice, every diamond is carefully selected with these principles in mind to ensure exceptional beauty and value.

Cut

The cut of a diamond refers not to its shape but to how well it has been proportioned, faceted and polished. A well-cut diamond captures light and returns it in a dazzling display of brilliance and sparkle.

From the classic Round Brilliant to the elegant Princess, Emerald or Oval shapes, we offer a wide range of expertly cut diamonds to suit every personal style. Our diamonds are precisely cut to maximise their natural beauty, ensuring they sparkle with every movement.

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions or blemishes within the stone. While these tiny imperfections are part of what makes each diamond unique, higher clarity grades indicate fewer and less visible inclusions.

Diamonds are graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) - with no inclusions visible under 10x magnification - to Included (I1-I3), where inclusions are visible to the naked eye. We carefully select diamonds that offer the ideal balance of clarity and character.

Carat

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, which typically correlates to its size. While larger diamonds are often considered more desirable, it's important to look at carat weight in harmony with the other Cs - a perfectly cut smaller diamond can be more captivating than a larger one with poor proportions.

When choosing the ideal carat weight, consider personal style, finger size and the presence of any surrounding stones in the design.

Colour

The finest white diamonds are colourless, graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). A truly  colourless diamond allows light to pass through it effortlessly, resulting in a purer, brighter sparkle.

At Hugh Rice, we typically offer diamonds within the most desirable colour grades to ensure your jewellery retains a bright and brilliant appearance for generations to come.

Choosing the Perfect Diamond

Buying a diamond is both a personal and emotional decision, and while the 4 Cs provide a framework, the perfect stone for you comes down to balance, taste, and lifestyle.

Here are a few helpful considerations:

What is the occasion? Engagement, anniversary, celebration or self-gift?

What shape speaks to you or the recipients style? Classic round, modern oval, romantic pear?

Is sparkle or size more important? A smaller diamond with a higher cut grade may appear more brilliant than a larger one.

Do you want a solitaire or a piece surrounded by diamonds? Halo and multi-stone designs offer added brilliance and presence.

Consider lifestyle For everyday wear (like an engagement ring), durability is key. You might prefer a shape and setting that protects the stone, such as a bezel or halo, especially for active lifestyles.

Trust your instincts Beyond grades and charts, the right diamond should speak to you. When you see it and it feels perfect, you’ve likely found your stone.

Our team is here to guide you through every decision, offering expert advice and helping you explore a wide variety of designs, settings, and stone combinations.
